Traditional telescope optics typically use circular mirrors with a doubly curved synclastic parabolic shape. &lt;p&gt;Image patterner is an extension of a technique for creating two dimensional ‘panel’ patterns of complex three dimensional surfaces. This technique has been extended to allow pre-printing of full colour designs onto (for example) fabric before cutting and assembly. Designs can cross seam boundaries without the dislocation that would otherwise be caused by the complex curvature of the surface.&lt;/p&gt;

There is no significance to this image, it just happens to be high-resolution and suitable for spherical mapping. Any Image would do for this job including a spherical panorama type image.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Image patterner is capable of mapping an image onto any rectangular mesh surface, not just a sphere (which is a special case of a rectangular mesh with double curvature).
